Endovenous Ablation Therapy
What is Endovenous Ablation Therapy?
Varicose veins develop as a result of small valves inside the veins not working properly. When the patient is healthy the one-way valves in veins maintain flow towards the heart against the forces of gravity. When the valves do not perform their function, the incompetent veins (identified using ultrasound) leads to pooling of blood in the legs causing varicose veins and other skin changes/damage.
Endovenous Ablation Therapy can be achieved via different ways:
- Heat – Radiofrequency ablation
- Cyanoacrylate glue – Venaseal ™
- Chemical (aesthoxsclerol) – Injection sclerotherapy
Is Endovenous Ablation Therapy Safe?
Endovenous Ablation Therapy is a very effective, safe and less-invasive treatment for large varicose veins.
Endovenous Ablation Therapy reduces the need for general anaesthesia, fewer incisions, less risk of surgical complications and faster recovery.
Endovenous Ablation Therapy has an overall success rate greater than 90% and the results are comparable to those of traditional surgery in the short term and the long term.
How is Endovenous Ablation Therapy Performed?
- With Radiofrequency Ablation – The catheter delivers energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse and seal.
- With Venaseal ™ – The catheter delivers cyanoacrylate glue to the vein, causing it to close and eventually seal
Once the vein is closed, other healthy veins take over and empty blood from the legs. As normal return flow is re-established in the body, symptoms improve noticeably over time.
With Injection sclerotherapy, no local anaesthetic is used. Very small needles with appropriate doses of medication are delivered directly to the veins being treated, often with ultrasound guidance to reduce the risk complications. Compression stockings are used to reduced post procedure swelling and the treated veins will close as part of the healing process. The time taken for this can vary with each individual.
